Beyond the Page: Contemporary Art from Pakistan
Edited by Anita Dawood and Hammad Nasar

The publication is a 68 page hardback, accompanying the exhibition Beyond the Page at Asia House and Manchester Art Gallery in 2006. The publication includes contributions from Roger Connah, Hammad Nasar, Anna Sloan and Virginia Whiles. Nasar explores the idea of miniature as attitude, looking at the aspects of the miniature that have found their way into other media. Sloan traces the development of this attitude, exploring how it sits internationally within the context of contemporary installation art.

Virginia Whiles takes a detailed look at Zahoor ul Akhlaq’s work, highlighting his explorations of the miniature, which set the course for the contemporary miniature movement today, and Roger Connah offers insights into Akhlaq; his work and his legacy. The publication also includes images of works in the exhibition, reference works by these artists’ and the artists’ biographies. Beyond the Page features the work of Hamra Abbas, Zahoor ul Akhlaq, Aisha Khalid, Hasnat Mehmood, Muhammad Imran Qureshi, Nusra Latif Qureshi, Rashid Rana, Usman Saeed.

The exhibition was held at Asia House Gallery, London and Manchester Art Gallery.
