University of Derby Design Brochure 2010 23 July 2010

For the second year running Reform Creative have produced the Faculty of Arts, Design and Technology brochure for the University of Derby.

Derby BrochureDerby SpreadDerby Perforated

Purpose of publication
To promote creative courses within the Faculty of Arts, Design and Technology at the University of Derby. Predominantly art and design courses, as well as subjects like film and creative writing.

To be used as a marketing publication, after prospective students have received the prospectus - it will mainly be distributed at the Design Your Future event, and at University open days.

To show examples of high quality student work as well as student and graduate success stories.

To give an insight into creative life within the faculty and in Derby, including research activities, events, exhibitions, community projects and cultural links.

Target audience and their needs
The main audience the brochure is aimed at creative people interested in taking one of our creative courses (mostly undergraduate, but also some postgraduate) - this includes school leavers and mature students.

This could also include people who are already professional artists and crafts makers.

Design style
We are aiming for the brochure to have an arts/culture magazine feel.
The design needs to be high quality, sophisticated, credible and creative.

However, because a lot of the content will be student work, the design needs to give this workspace to breathe. So we wouldn’t want it to be ‘over-designed.’

The design needs to have a strong concept running through it that brings the publication together and fits in with the brand values.

There are minimum branding elements that we need to incorporate, but these are minimal.

Reform’s Creative solution was to produce a French folded publication that is perforated down the fold edge of each page. On opening the publication the viewer was faced with a feast of imagery and were invited to discover the text within the French fold by breaking apart the pages.

Lucy Temple, Web and Publications Manager - University of Derby, comments
“We worked with Reform Creative on our creative courses brochure for the last two years. They won the job both times through a pitch process, where they were up against several other agencies. What always impressed us about Reform compared to the other agencies, was their creativity and innovation. Their work really stands out and importantly, each design had an idea behind it and a concept, rather than it just being a design that looked “cool” or “nice”. We also found them to be very good value for money and have really enjoyed working with them.”
